Welcome to MOONTA

Welcome to Taste the Yorke

Pull up a chair.

Whether you’re a local, a weekender, or just passing through the Yorke Peninsula, you’ll find a warm welcome waiting here.

At Taste the Yorke we keep things simple: exceptional coffee, honest food made with local produce, and good old-fashioned hospitality. The kind where we remember your name, ask how your day’s going, and might even point you towards a hidden beach or two.

Most people discover us by chance, wander in for a coffee… and before long they’re part of the regular crowd.

If you’re nearby, come in and say hello. We’d love to share a menu with you.

Our Heritage: The Story Behind the Proper Oggie

The Yorke Peninsula is full of stories, and one of the most important begins just down the road at the historic Moonta Mines — part of the remarkable Moonta Mines National Heritage Site.

In the 1800s, thousands of Cornish miners travelled here to work the rich copper mines. They brought more than mining skills with them — they brought their traditions, their community spirit, and a very practical lunch.

The Cornish pasty.

Back then, miners needed a hearty meal they could take underground. The traditional pasty was cleverly divided:
two thirds filled with meat and vegetables to keep them going through a hard day’s work, and the final third filled with something sweet — usually apple.

It was the original two-course meal in one.

Here at Taste the Yorke, we honour that local heritage with our version of the Proper Oggie.

Made the traditional way, just as the Cornish miners enjoyed it:
two thirds savoury filling, one third apple pie.

It’s more than just a meal. It’s a small taste of the history that helped shape this region and the community we’re proud to be part of.

So if you’re exploring the heritage trails, wandering through Moonta, or simply curious about the stories behind the Yorke Peninsula, the Proper Oggie is a delicious place to start.

And yes… the sweet end is meant to be saved for last.

About Taste the Yorke

Where local flavours, warm hospitality and a true sense of place come together.

Taste the Yorke opened its doors in Moonta in late 2016 with a simple mission: to showcase the best local, regional, and seasonal produce the Copper Coast has to offer. What started as a small idea quickly grew into a community favourite — a cosy space where locals, weekenders and curious travellers could slow down, enjoy great coffee, and savour flavours crafted close to home.

A Simple Idea, Made With Heart

From the beginning, the concept was clear. Bring together the goodness grown, made, and created right here on Yorke Peninsula, and share it in a charming, rustic setting that feels both familiar and inviting. Our daily menu is built around fresh ingredients and local specialties, with house-made cakes that have become a delicious reason to visit all on their own.

Finding Our Home in Moonta

In 2017, Taste the Yorke moved into its forever home — the former Roach and Sons Butchers, a building rich with local history. Sitting proudly across from the Town Hall and Queen Square, it’s the perfect spot to settle in with a coffee, connect with our team, and feel part of the rhythm of Moonta.

Local Produce. Consistent Coffee. Genuine Hospitality.

Our commitment has never changed. We champion the makers, growers and producers who shape this region. We strive to serve consistently great coffee, offer warm and thoughtful hospitality, and create a space where everyone — locals, tourists, day-trippers, and food lovers — feels welcomed and valued.

Taste the Yorke isn’t just a café. It’s a celebration of the Copper Coast, its people, and the flavours that make this part of the world so special.
A true Taste of Yorke.
